ALBANY - Proposal 1: the referendum to legalize Las Vegas style casinos in New York, even off Indian land, has passed.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has promised casinos will lower our property taxes.
The proposal won 57 percent of the vote statewide.
In Saratoga where one of those casinos likely will land, voters have actually come out against the measure with 53 percent in Saratoga County voting against it.
Many churches in the Capital Region voiced their opposition.
And performance venues like SPAC and Proctors spoke of concerns casinos will build their own theatres and restaurants and starve local venues.
The proposal to allow casinos won strong support downstate.
Supporters say casinos will bring added revenue for schools too.
In addition to Saratoga, casinos are expected to be built in the Southern Tier, New York City eventually, and perhaps two in the Catskills.
