The Senate passed legislation Thursday that gay rights advocates are calling a major victory.

The Employment Non-Discrimination Act bans employers from firing, refusing to hire or discriminating against people based on sexual orientation.

Political analysts say the bill will most likely be rejected in the House but a representative from the Empire State Pride Agenda tells us today marks a big step in the right direction.

“This is a really important step, as was marriage equality several years ago and the defeat, the appeal of DOMA and “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’. These are really important measures to indicate that the tide is turning, “says Sheilah Sable of Empire State Pride Agenda.

The President released a statement saying he thanks the lawmakers from both sides of the aisle who have stood up for America's core values of fairness and equality.
