The Rensselaer County prosecutor who dropped the ball and allowed an alleged child rapist to be dismissed of felony charges is stepping down.

District attorney Rich McNally confirms Assistant District Attorney Laura Kruegler submitted her resignation on Friday.

The office had six months to indict John Halacy after his arrest in February or get a waiver to extend that time, but authorities did neither.

Halacy is accused of sexually abusing two young girls.
