Women who use tobacco or other drugs during pregnancy may double their risk of a stillbirth.

Researchers tested blood samples from thousands of women who gave birth to live or stillborn infants.

They also tested the umbilical cord to assess drug exposure to the fetus.

The study found that women who had a still birth had a higher rate of exposed to tobacco and other drugs.

Experts also found that secondhand smoke was just as harmful as when the women smoked themselves.
