SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The trial that captivated, and sickened the people of western Massachusetts and beyond for more than two years, ended on Friday with the conviction of Adam Lee Hall.
Hall, the ranking member of a Hells Angels motorcycle club, was the mastermind behind the brutal kidnapping and murder of three, Pittsfield residents in the summer of 2011.
What may be the most remarkable thing was that the jury reached the decision less than one hour after telling the judge they were hopelessly deadlocked.
Also, prosecutors had no DNA evidence, no physical evidence, and no crime scene identified. There were also some witnesses with serious credibility issues.
When the guilty verdicts were read, it marked the end of a very long nightmare for Carol Chadwell Smith, whose brother was one of the people brutally killed and tortured at the hands of Adam Lee Hall.
“I was just at a point where I was just going to collapse with satisfaction. I'm just overwhelmed by the verdict of being guilty. It's over,” said Smith.
“It's important for the public to know that this was not an investigation of whether Adam (Lee) Hall had done this. It was determining truth, justice, and what had happened. That's the way it came out,” said District Attorney David Capeless.
“It makes me crazy in the head to see this guy smiling at the cameras like he's at a photo shoot. I mean, who does that? There's no remorse whatsoever,” she said.
Capeless refused to comment on the strategy he would use for two other co-defendants, saying it would be inappropriate.
Hall faces life in prison without parole, when he is sentenced on Monday morning.
