TROY, N.Y. – Juniors Jacob Laliberte and Ryan Haggerty scored to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s hockey team to a 2-2 tie with Clarkson University, this evening at the Houston Field House. With the draw, the Engineers are now 13-13-6 overall (7-8-5 ECAC Hockey), while the Golden Knights move to 17-14-3 (10-9-1 ECAC Hockey).

After a scoreless first period in which the Engineers held a 14-7 edge in shots on goal, Laliberte (Rockland, ON/Cornwall Colts) gave the hosts a 1-0 lead at 1:41 of the second, claiming his own rebound in the low slot and sticking it past Clarkson sophomore netminder Greg Lewis (Mars, PA/Wenatchee Wild) for his fifth goal of the season. The power-play tally was assisted by sophomore Mike Zalewski (New Hartford, NY/Vernon Vipers).

The Golden Knights pulled even (1-1) at 9:20 of the stanza, on a shot from the left circle by junior Joe Zarbo (Grand Island, NY/Wellington Dukes). Senior Jarrett Burton (Echo Bay, ON/Kingston Voyageurs) found Zarbo alone in front for his sixth tally of the year.

Haggerty (Stamford, CT/U.S. National Dev. Team) then put the Engineers ahead 2-1 at 17:44 of the second, taking a feed from senior Brock Higgs (Kingston, ON/Kingston Voyageurs) and rifling a shot past Lewis for his league-leading 24th tally of the season. Sophomore Craig Bokenfohr (Spruce Grove, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) earned the secondary assist.

Clarkson sophomore blue-liner Kevin Tansey (Hammond, ON/Cumberland Grads) netted the game-tying goal at 12:20 of the third period, moments after a Golden Knights power-play had expired. Senior Allan McPherson (Kinburn, ON/Kanata Stallions) was tabbed with the lone helper.

RPI junior goaltender Scott Diebold (Buffalo, NY/Tri-City Storm) helped preserve the draw making a pair of spectacular save down the stretch. He finished with 30 on the evening. Lewis turned away 33 shots at the other end of the ice.

Rensselaer honored its five seniors after the game. The Class of 2014 includes Guy Leboeuf (West Palm Beach, FL/Cornwall Colts), Bo Dolan (St. Paul, MN/Penticton Vees), Johnny Rogic (Vancouver, BC/Alberni Valley Bulldogs), Higgs and captain Matt Tinordi (Severna Park, MD/Olds Grizzlys).

The Engineers return to the ice next weekend, when they visit Brown and 14th-ranked Yale to close out the regular season. Puck drop for both Friday and Saturday night’s games is set for 7pm.
