Two Union Defenseman Sign with NHL Teams

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Senior Mat Bodie, the all-time leading defenseman scorer in school history, has signed a free-agent contract to play for the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League.

Bodie captained the Union Dutchmen to the NCAA Division I National Championship last Saturday, completing his college career with an overall record of 104-37-20. Bodie set a Union season record for defenseman scoring with 39 points, amassing eight goals and 31 assists. He was named an AHCA/CCM All-American and finished as the second-highest scoring defenseman in the country.

Within the past month alone, Bodie was named to three all-tournament teams (NCAA Frozen Four, NCAA East Regional, ECAC Hockey Championship) and ended his career with a six-game points streak and goals in four straight contests. He also leaves Union as the school's all-time assist leader (96) at the Division I level.






SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Union College's Shayne Gostisbehere has decided to forgo his senior year of eligibility and signed today a professional entry-level contract with the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League. The Flyers held Gostisbehere's rights after selecting him in the third round (78th overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

Gostisbehere will report to the Adirondack Phantoms in Glen Falls on Wednesday, and begin playing for the Flyers' affiliate in the American Hockey League.

Gostisbehere's final collegiate season was highlighted by an NCAA Championship last Saturday, as Union downed Minnesota, 7-4, in Philadelphia. He\ was named the Frozen Four's Most Outstanding Player, finishing with five points (goal, four assists) over the weekend and posting a gaudy plus-7 rating in the championship game.

The All-American defenseman compiled nine goals and 25 assists for 34 points in 42 games this season and was named one of 10 Hobey Baker Finalists.
