High school cheerleading can now be considered a competitive sport in New York State.
The Board of Regents approved it Tuesday afternoon.
The education commissioner says safety is driving the decision.
Treating cheerleading as a sport will mandate training levels for coaches and other changes.
Schools will still be allowed to use cheering to support other athletes, providing the cheerleaders don't take part in the more vigorous and dangerous parts of the activity.
