EAST GREENBUSH - The company that runs the Kentucky Derby is entering the race for that Capital Region casino.
Churchill Downs Incorporated was announced Tuesday morning as the partner with Saratoga Casino and Raceway.
The two companies want to build a $300 million casino resort off I-90 at Exit 9.
One casino license will be awarded later this year for an operation somewhere in the area.
At least four other developers are competing with the East Greenbush effort.
“There will be hotel room, hotel rooms totaling 300 to 500 and a couple of different configurations. Multiple entertainment venues including a sports bar and night club and a showroom,” says Rita Cox of the Saratoga Casino and Raceway.
Local arts organizations are concerned a new casino and entertainment venue would cripple existing show venues.
The East Greenbush team says there is room for a partnership arrangement with local arts groups to protect their interests.
